New Amphitheater Coming Summer 2027!
A dream becomes reality
As the 2026 Rockin’ Robbins season draws to a close, construction will soon begin on the new Robbins Island Amphitheater—a project years in the making.
The new facility will feature a unique two-sided stage. The 32-foot by 32-foot main stage will face the large festival grounds and is designed to accommodate audiences of up to 10,000 people during major concerts and community events. The reverse side of the structure features a smaller 20-foot stage that takes advantage of the park’s natural hillside, creating a more intimate performance space for smaller gatherings, educational programs and community performances.
The design also includes an air-conditioned green room for performers, storage space, and a restroom. new utility infrastructure, improved trails, enhanced accessibility and site improvements that will make the park more functional throughout the year. Careful planning minimizes impacts on existing trees while preserving the natural beauty that has made Robbins Island one of Willmar’s favorite destinations.
A community-wide investment
The idea for an amphitheater had been discussed in Willmar for more than a decade, but momentum accelerated in 2022 when the Willmar Rotary Club partnered with the City of Willmar, Engan Associates, and numerous community organizations to discuss designs and develop a plan.
As one of the earliest champions of the amphitheater project, the Willmar Rotary Club made an initial commitment of $250,000, then an additional $100,000 to see it through. The City of Willmar also successfully secured two Legacy grants totaling more than $2.6 million through the Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails Commission Legacy Grant Program. Additional funding has come through local fundraising, city partnerships and community support, making the amphitheater a true public-private collaboration.
In 2026, the Willmar City Council approved engineering services and awarded the construction contract for the approximately $3.1 million project, officially launching construction on the long-awaited facility.
A home for Rockin’ Robbins, and so much more
While the amphitheater will provide a permanent home for Rockin’ Robbins concerts, its impact will extend far beyond four Tuesday evenings each summer.
The venue is expected to host community festivals, multicultural celebrations, school performances, theater productions, outdoor movies, educational programming, nonprofit events and regional entertainment throughout the year. Combined with the Destination Playground, disc golf course, updated picnic shelters, lighted trails, swimming beach and other recreational amenities already found at Robbins Island Regional Park, the amphitheater will further establish the park as one of Greater Minnesota’s premier outdoor gathering places.
